Development of Mid Tier Strategy for a large North American Bank
Business Background
The Channels and Integration Group within the bank needed to rationalize their technology and services and have an IT road map which is aligned to their business strategy and objectives as well as the banks’ Enterprise Architecture direction. The application and integration middle-tier has reached a state where development and maintenance of it has become quite complex and costly. Its capabilities have been getting built in silos, overlapping capabilities have been built using multiple technologies and there is no clear direction on what components to reuse, and how to reuse them.
Solution Provided
Understood and assessed the present (As Is) Middle-Tier Architecture
Suggested the “To Be” Architecture based on various factors such as Industry trend, banks’ enterprise roadmap and directions, etc.
Performed a Gap Analysis for the “To Be” Architecture vis-à-vis “As Is” Architecture
Recommended the tactical and strategic directions, with architectural blue prints for run-time containers, transaction services, data services, middleware, message standards and security recommendations
Aligned the Middle-Tier strategy roadmap with the IT roadmap of the Bank to provide realistic timelines for implementation of strategy
Business Benefits
The proposed Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) based blue print of Mid-Tier Architecture will reduce the complexity of application development and maintenance
The proposed roadmap to reduce the current number of Application Portfolio in Mid-Tier, with application rationalization initiatives and with business justification, will control the escalation of maintenance cost
The proposed architecture is aligned with overall enterprise architecture initiative of the bank
Application re-engineering for a leading North American Financial Services Organization
Business Background
Microsoft’s decision to stop support for DOS by end of 2006. The bank had to migrate it DOS based Client layer of its 12 applications: due to Microsoft decommissioning of DOS Support
Aging and unsupported technology is the key driver for this project, as the DOS Workbench applications use non-standard and unsupported software such as: Realia COBOL and EZVU, C/C++ with DSML & Vermont. Security and Audit concerns
Scalability and re-use across channels in line with Enterprise initiative towards SOA
Solution Provided
iGATE team re-engineered the Client Tier of the application and re-used Mainframe transactions
iGATE team developed J2EE based thin client which calls the CICS and IMS transactions using J2C connectors
Best-of-Breed Solution - Service oriented Architecture (SOA)
Seamless integration of the applications with existing applications in the Bank
Same User experience has been maintained- to reduce the transition time, minimize training cost for Head down users (Key board Access)
Requirements re-engineered from the code
Independent team for QA
Benefits to the client
Business Continuity – Rapid Ramp up to Complete the Re-engineering of applications within 18 months and before Microsoft decommission DOS Support by end of 2006
End to End ownership – Requirements, Architecture, Design, Coding and UAT, Mainframe changes where necessary
iGATE’s Domain Group with Techno-functional background to complement Client’s SME
Application Re-engineering and Development for Cheque Image Exchange –(BANKS’)
Business Background
Mandatory exchange digital images and code line data for settlement by the The Canadian Payments Association (CPA)
Bank initiated Cheque Image Exchange (CIE), (formerly known as TECP: Truncation and Electronic Cheque Presentment) a multi-year project to re-design its clearing and settlement process.
Bank also wanted to leverage electronic processing to maximize operational efficiencies and capitalize on new product and revenue opportunities.
The scope of the CIE/Deposits project was to perform development activities (requirements gathering, design, build, test and implementation) for Deposits applications impacted due to CIE initiative.
Bank also wanted to migrate the existing mainframe Assembler language based Pay/No-Pay decision application to an integrated image retrieval system.
Solution Provided
Requirements gathering
Application re-engineering to drive the business rule extraction for client’s pay/no-pay decision application (EXAD – Exception Administration – Entirely written in Mainframe Assembler), design, development and testing
It provided the design and conversion services to expand the IMS DEBD and HDAM databases using a well defined conversion process IMS utilities
Business Benefits
Based on iGATE’s knowledge through the systems appreciation work, iGATE completed the design and development offshore hence was able to lower the overall cost
Bank received application mining capabilities on Mainframe Assembler language that helped in extraction of business rules from EXAD application
Bank also received a reusable data conversion process using a set of tools and usage guidelines for database expansion
